LA Puglia Restaurant & Bakery

1621 Wilshire Boulevard

Santa Monica, California

The client is a celebrated Pugliese restaurateur who dreamed of opening a restaurant in Los Angeles that provides an Authentic Southern Italian Food Experience.

The task was to transform the existing dark, middle storefront space into a bright airy environment that recalls the atmosphere of her home region – Puglia, Italy.

On the roof, a line of clerestory windows was added to act as a light monitor, bringing soft northern light into the back of the dining room.

The storefront was moved back from the sidewalk, to create a gracious entry sequence and allow for layers of Mediterranean inspired vegetation to buffer the dining room from busy Wilshire Boulevard.

A simple palette of wood, steel, concrete, and sand colored plaster together with the vintage furniture and fixtures shipped from Italy, combine to invoke the aesthetic of the Pugliese region.

Simple, fresh, light, and harmonious.

The Musicians Institute purchased this building to expand their campus to the Hollywood Blvd. Walk of Fame. They wanted to convert this 900 sf space at the front of the building from a retail space to a restaurant to be used by their students and the public.

The existing space was narrow & low and only had exposure to the front of the building. The new construction was designed to negate the existing shoebox space. The VISUAL SPACE was expanded to incorporate an underutilized alley walkway by opening up the side exposure with SLIDING GLASS WALLS. The DIAGONAL WALL enclosing the kitchen effectively takes away two of the walls of the shoebox. The space is shaped by soffits for ducting and lighting. To create an ILLUSION OF HEIGHT the soffits are kept low at the walls to allow the space to reach its maximum height at the center. The cabinetry breaks free of the wall and becomes a freestanding island, more conducive to COMMUNAL GATHERING.
